Vintage Daytona on a lady.

December 9, 2009 MYK 5 comments

I never thought I’d see a vintage Daytona in a ladies’ magazine, this is from the September issue of Vogue magazine. My wife just showed me this and  I love it. The watch on the scarf is so original but I still prefer nato bands for vintage watches. ;)

Still breathing?

The richest people in the world have gotten poorer, just like the rest of us.Forbes

The financial crisis has spared no one. Even the big boys were called in to play and I guess the bigger you are, the harder you fall. Right? Wrong! So what if your networth dropped from 60 billion to 35 billion? You can still afford to spoil a couple of dozen generations! Look at the poor millionaires (no pun intended) and how they’re coping with all of this.

Look at the chart above, it’s an actual chart of the index performance of the Kuwait Stock Exchange.

Mr. Dananeer walks into a bank on July 1st, 2008, he uses his portfolio of shares worth 4 million Dinars as collateral and borrows 3 million Dinars from the bank. Mr. Dananeer used that money to buy more shares, he now has 7 million Dinars worth of shares in the Kuwaiti Stock Exchange. On March 1st, 2009, his portfolio shrinks to be worth only 2,625,000. The bank sells his shares and takes the money to settle his loan, plus interest, plus fees and he now owes the bank over 400,000 Dinars.

Now that, is a sad story.

Poke you!

I’ve been on the internet for over a decade now (I just realized how old I am). My hotmail account has been registered since June 25th 1999 and I clearly remember being online even before that. What I find a little odd is that I’m not too good/interested in social networking. I’ve never had a myspace account, I find facebook too crowded and twitter too busy. No offense to anyone but why would I want people to know where I am, what I’m doing and who I’m with all the livelong day!? I don’t find it wrong, nor do I find it lame. I just think it’s not for me.

Maybe it’s because I prefer socializing in real life. I really don’t know, I can’t get enough browsing, reading, even participating in forums, I just never got into socializing online. This post was inspired by Funny People, a movie by Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen. There’s a part in the movie where George Simmons (Adam Sandler) does some stand up comedy for a myspace event and ends up trashing myspace, craigslist and facebook! I can’t find that particular part but this part is also really funny!

Fly cheap, with class.

December 2, 2009 MYK Leave a comment

Flying off to Dubai for a day, or spending the weekend in Cyprus is no longer a far fetched luxury. With round trips costing less than what a taxi would charge for driving you from Heathrow Airport to Knightsbridge, even a day trip sounds pretty reasonable. The two obvious choices in Kuwait are Jazeera Airways and Wataniya Ariways. Both have great websites, competitive prices and new airplanes. I think it’s even safe to call them the safest Kuwaiti based airlines.

I’ve tried both and out of the two, Wataniya is by far my favorite. You have free land transportation all the way when you book first class, the lounge still has a smoking room, the inflight entertainment system is superb, the food is actually good and the crew are very professional. Even in premier economy, you still get a free meal, more legroom and the airport itself is actually like a big first class lounge. Wataniya Airways use Sheikh Saad terminal pictured above, it’s actually the terminal used for private jets and is a seperate building from Kuwaiti airport altogether. I think Wataniya’s slogan should be; “Fly cheap, with class!” ;) Seriously, even there ads are classy.

Jazeera’s ads are more of a fly cheap effectively. They probably have the edge when it comes to effective marketing. Mass emails, newspaper ads, the internet and even the radio. I mean even google finds Jazeera easier, click the above picture to see what I mean. Using watania as a tag word for jazeera airways! How sneaky smart is that? Jazeera also cost a little less in some cases but remember to read the fine print. I mean who travels without luggage? With the light fare, you actually have to pay for carry on luggage! Nonetheless, they are still a great airline and I would still fly on them.  One of the things I appreciated was the punctuality, I don’t see them advertising that anymore and just hope it’s not because they’ve lost that too.

I’m back.

November 30, 2009 MYK 5 comments

Over the last few years I have went through quite a few expeditions, projects, hobbies etc.. Not really sure what to call them. Some were interesting, others were boring. Some were useful, others were useless. Some were worth the time, others were a waste of time. Nonetheless I have no regrets and I appreciate the experience gained. What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger right?

A couple of years ago I started a blog, mykblog.com. I used to post on a daily/semi-daily basis. I ran it for almost a year and received decent traffic. One day I decided to upgrade the blog. Long story short, a messed up laptop, a broken memory stick and a couple of frustrated clicks later, I lost it all. The posts, the pics and the videos. Moral of the story, if it’s not broken, don’t fix it!

This year I started Q8Chrono.com, a website where users can buy/sell watches (another passion of mine) online. That didn’t turn out too great and is now a part of something bigger, better, comming soon. I missed blogging and since mykblog.com has already been taken by someone, I though I’d use this domain to blog.

I will try not to bore you with many posts about watches but I can’t promise a post about some, every once in a while.
